IGCSE Biology Revision Guide: From Memorising Facts to Explaining Processes
Use diagrams, process chains, precise terminology and data interpretation to make Biology revision more active and reliable.
Biology rewards precise explanation
Knowing a keyword is useful, but many Biology questions ask you to explain a process, interpret data or apply a concept to an unfamiliar situation. Revision should therefore include retrieval, explanation and application—not only rereading notes.
Turn a process into a sequence
For processes such as transport, digestion, respiration or homeostasis, build a sequence: starting condition → mechanism → intermediate change → final outcome. Then practise explaining the sequence without looking at your notes.
Use diagrams actively
- Cover labels and recall them.
- Redraw a structure from memory.
- Annotate what each part does.
- Compare similar structures and identify functional differences.
Learn command words

| Describe | Report what is shown or what happens, using relevant detail. |
| Explain | Link cause, mechanism and outcome. |

Practise data and unfamiliar contexts
Do not avoid graphs, tables and experimental scenarios. Start by identifying the variables and units, describe the pattern, then connect it to biological reasoning. When a question gives unfamiliar information, use the data rather than assuming the answer must come from memory.
A strong final-week routine
Use short retrieval sessions, mixed exam questions and targeted corrections. Avoid spending the entire final week rereading the textbook. The aim is to practise the act you will perform in the exam: retrieving, interpreting and explaining.
