What strong IGCSE Mathematics preparation looks like

Good IGCSE preparation combines mathematical fluency with decision-making. Students need to recognise what a question is testing, select a suitable method, communicate working clearly and check whether an answer is sensible.

Use a three-layer practice system

Layer 1 — Fluency

Practise algebraic manipulation, numerical skills, formula use and standard techniques until the mechanics stop consuming most of your attention.

Layer 2 — Problem solving

Mix question types. Ask yourself what information matters, what representation would help, and which mathematical idea connects the given information to the unknown.

Layer 3 — Exam performance

Use timed sections and full papers. Review not only incorrect answers but also questions where you used too much time or could not explain your reasoning cleanly.

Past papers are diagnostic tools. A past paper should tell you which concept or decision-making skill needs work next—not simply give you a score.

How to review a past paper

  1. Mark every lost mark by reason.
  2. Separate knowledge errors from reading or interpretation errors.
  3. Rewrite one representative question correctly.
  4. Do two new questions testing the same skill.
  5. Re-test the skill several days later.

Common traps

  • Starting calculation before identifying the required quantity.
  • Using a memorised formula without checking the variables and units.
  • Skipping diagrams or graphs when they would clarify the structure.
  • Doing only comfortable questions instead of mixed practice.
  • Checking only the final answer rather than the reasoning.

Build confidence systematically

Confidence usually follows evidence. Track the types of questions you can now solve independently, the errors that have disappeared and the time required for common tasks. That gives you a much more useful measure of progress than a single test score.
