Physics is more than substituting numbers
A strong IB Physics student can move between words, diagrams, equations, graphs and units. If you memorise an equation but cannot explain the quantities involved or recognise when it applies, unfamiliar questions can become difficult quickly.
Build each topic in four steps
- Concept: explain the physical phenomenon in simple language.
- Representation: draw a diagram, graph or labelled system where useful.
- Equation: know what each symbol means and how the relationship changes when a variable changes.
- Application: solve unfamiliar questions and interpret the result.
Use units as a checking tool
Write units throughout calculations. Units can expose incorrect conversions, help identify the required quantity and provide a quick sanity check on a final answer.
How to practise data, graphs and experimental thinking
IB Physics questions often require you to interpret data, identify relationships, discuss uncertainties or evaluate an experimental approach. Practise moving between a physical model and the evidence shown in a table or graph.
Past-paper review that actually improves performance
- Tag errors as concept, equation, unit, graph, calculation, interpretation or command-word errors.
- Find another question testing the same skill.
- Redo it without the mark scheme.
- Explain the correction aloud or in writing.
- Return to the skill later rather than assuming one correction is enough.
Final revision
In the final weeks, mix topics rather than studying one chapter at a time. Include unfamiliar problems, data-based questions and explanations so you practise identifying the relevant physics from the wording of the question.
